  • A letter from the owner/information about purchasing glasses for kids...
I started fitting kids with glasses over 30 years ago. It truly warms my heart when my now grown customers bring their children in for glasses. When a grown customer brings in their grandchild, I think it will be time to retire! I learn new things every day and each day comes with new challenges. Kids' faces are so different than adults' faces. They are still growing and changing. Until they are about 7 or 8 years old, they have small bridges on their noses, tender skin, and they can have many other unique facial features that make fitting glasses properly a challenge. It drives me crazy when I see a product being marketed that claims, “this size fits kids from ages 3-5, etc.” I have five year olds that wear teenage size glasses. I have 9 year olds that wear the same size as a typical 3 year old. I can try 10 frames in the same “size” and only 1 or 2 actually fit properly. Once I find the correct size, I spend time adjusting the glasses specifically for the child's face for comfort. I can't comprehend how glasses are promoted for purchase online for children. So much goes into the proper fit including measurements, proper prescription, adjustments, comfort, functionality, and style. How do you pick a frame off a web site and it fits?! It must be a miracle. I read an article that said that buying glasses online for a child in the UK is actually illegal. Huh? There must be something to that. Heck, I love Amazon as much as the next person, but I just don’t understand buying glasses online, not even for adults. Another big issue about purchasing glasses online is durability. Children can be hard on glasses. What happens if the frame breaks? I choose frames for style, but also for the way they fit and their durability and manufacturer warranties. And, having quality lenses with your child's prescription is of the utmost importance. I use what I consider to be one of the best labs in the country. If there is ever an issue with how the lenses are processed, I am able to return them and have it promptly corrected. When buying glasses online, how do you know that they are made correctly? I guess your doctor can check them. But, how do they fit if they aren’t adjusted properly? I have challenges adjusting the glasses every day and I have been doing this for a long time. As you can see, I am very passionate about fitting kids with glasses. I put my heart and soul into this business and I get frustrated when fitting kids with glasses isn’t taken seriously. Sports glasses are another important issue. I only carry sports glasses that have been designed and tested for impact. A lot of the sports glasses being sold are not designed and tested for impact. I understand style is an important factor when buying sports glasses, but your child's safety is a priority to me. The sole purpose of sports glasses is to help a child have proper vision and protect their eyes and face while participating in sports. I think there may be a misunderstanding when buying glasses. You are not just buying a product, you are also receiving a service...an experienced optician to choose, fit, and service the glasses. If someone just wanted my help picking out frames and not purchasing them here, there would be a $50 consultation fee. If someone wants me to adjust their glasses not purchased here, there is a $25 fee. More often than not, I do not adjust glasses that are not purchased at EFK, because I can not be liable if they break. If someone wants me to measure their pd, there is a $25 fee. With all this in mind, you can be confident that when you purchase glasses at Eyes For Kids & Teens, you are receiving a quality product designed for children. An experienced optician will help choose, fit, adjust, and service the child's glasses. EFK has many frames to choose from to meet your child's individual needs. Plus, we will get the best lenses to help your child see their best. We care about how the glasses fit your child. We have fun styles that children love and we enjoy helping them pick out a frame so they will like wearing glasses. We stand by our products and are here to help in any way we can. Thank you for your time. Aimee
  • How do I get my child to wear glasses?
Usually your child will realize after a few hours or days that they see better, and they will want to wear their new glasses. The first hours/days can be difficult. You have to be very adamant about putting the glasses back on your child when he/she takes them off. Read a book with your child, and if the glasses come off, say "glasses on" so we can read the book. Do the same thing when playing and watching an ipad/television. Keep the child's hands busy, or go to the park to keep their mind off of their glasses. Distraction works wonders.
  • How often does my child need new glasses?
Most frames fit 1-2 years. If a prescription change is needed and the frame still fits and is in good condition, you can use the same frame. In most cases, we do not need to keep your child's frame in order to process new lenses. How long the frame holds up depends on the quality of the frame, and the wear and tear it gets.
  • How long does it take to make a pair of glasses?
It depends on the prescription, but usually 7-14 working days.
  • Which insurances do you take?
We take MES Vision/Medical Eye Services, and although we are out of network for VSP, we can submit a form on your behalf for any OUT OF NETWORK benefits that your child has available. They will send you a check within 2-3 weeks after you have picked up the glasses. You can call VSP or go online to see what out of network benefits your child has available. For other insurances, we can give you an itemized receipt to submit for reimbursement. Read more on our website under "Insurance" for reasons we do not take many insurances.
  • Why not buy glasses online or at a cheap optical chain to save money?
You may save money at first, but in the long run, it will cost you more in replacements, time, and frustration. Eyes For Kids could carry "cheap" frames and process "cheap" lenses, but we are here to provide quality products for our customers because we care about your child's vision. When you buy glasses, you aren't just buying a frames and lenses, but you are paying for our expertise in frame fitting and lens options, the ability to try on multiple frames on site, and unlimited adjustments and minor repairs. If you buy glasses online, how do you know that the prescription is correct and that the optical centers are correct vertically and horizontally? At Eyes For Kids, we double check all prescription glasses purchased at our store. Who will adjust the glasses if you buy them online or if you get a poor adjustment? Eyes For Kids offers free adjustments and minor repairs on glasses purchased at our store. Adjusting kids glasses well requires years of experience. If the glasses bought elsewhere break, is there a warranty, and does your child go without glasses while they are being ordered? We warranty all our frames for 1-2 years. Eyes For Kids lets parents borrow frames or we temporarily repair the frames if we do not have a replacement in stock. The bottom line is that buying glasses online or at a cheap retail store that doesn't specialize in children's eyewear is not worth it...you get subpar frames and lenses that do not fit well. In other words....you get what you pay for.
